I'm trying to create a large surface for a project. It should look like a rocky planet with impact craters, something like 4x4 meters or yards in size.I've tried isolation foam but It's expensive and I need more volume . stuff should be light preferably. So basically any suggestions on similar inexpensive materials would be great, thanks ! !
4x4 meters is 12x12 feet is 144 square feet. 2 cubic feet is what? 2'x2'x2', so 4 square feet 24 inches deep. 144 square feet / 4 square feet is 36 24 inches deep / 36 units is about 2/3 inch deep.
How deep do the impact craters need to be? What about getting a bunch of Styrofoam packing pieces (big shapes, as opposed to 'peanuts'), gluing them together, carving roughly the shapes you want, and then going over it with a heat gun and/or spray paint? The paint will partially dissolve the Styrofoam and blend seams.
This might work in combination with the 2-part expanding foam stuff, if it is chemically similar.
