I'm very fascinated with electronic music projects, and am wondering where I should go to learn basic math and theory, as well as kits for projects. My area of interest lies specifically with sound modification and creation, like projects for creating guitar pedals or vocoders. Are there any books/forums/kits you can recommend to a total n00b?
Forrest Mims has a bunch of easily-accessible introductory electronics books. I liked "Getting Started in Electronics" (ISBN 0945053282), but most of it was a little too basic for me. Another book I have is "Practical Electronics for Inventors" (Paul Scherz, ISBN 0945053282), which covers a lot more but isn't as accessible as the Mims book.
I haven't read them, but I've seen friends of mine reading a couple of books on the subject of audio electronics: "Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking" by Nicholas Collins (ISBN 0415998735) and "Electronic Projects for Musicians" by Craig Anderton (ISBN 0825695023). The former is quite new (latest edition was this year), the latter quite old (1980). A lot of old audio electronics projects make use of obsolete op-amps; while there's probably a replacement part, it will make them more difficult.
A Google search for "audio electronics schematics" or "effect pedal schematics" turns up a lot of stuff, but I don't know how much of that is useful.
Thanks for the response...I'll go check those out. Are beginners' kits a good investment? I'd like to get some hands-on experience, but I'm not 10 years old, so I'm guessing some of them might be a waste of time.
