I was thinking about buying an under cabinet DVD/TV/Radio combo. However I also had the idea of attaching a computer to it as well using a Mini-ITX board to hide it in the cabinet spacers. Something that would allow me to also go online and find recipe's etc.

Would it be best to buy an under the cabinet combo player and find a way to attach allow the LCD to display the computer as well, or should I try and build something myself.

The problem with building one myself is I am not sure it would be cost effective and I don't know I could get the LCD to swivel down as neatly as this combo player does.

On the other hand, how difficult would it be to make the LCD recognize the computer?

If you use a under cabinet TV / radio with an integrated monitor, you won't get a decent monitor for a computer. TV resolutions are considerably lower then computer monitors.

Most LCD monitors are designed to use alternative mounts, so it's fairly easy to mount one under a cabinet. You can find a selection of mounts at Amazon as well as other sources, (search for "VESA mount").

If I were doing it, I'd get a Mac Mini & a USB TV/Radio tuner.

Edit: I corrected the Amazon link above.

1) Get an old laptop.

2) Attach a lazy-susan turntable bearing to the bottom.

3) attach a slide in bracket to the cabinet underside.

3) Hack video driver to flip image or flip LCD in frame - a quick google finds:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/iRotate.shtml for Win32 or use native driver rotation and /etc/X11/xorg.conf options.

4) Run MythTV Server on main PC, MythTV Client on Laptop, or TiVo Desktop, or Slingbox client, etc. to get TV to laptop.

4) Connect wireless KB and mouse.

I had/have the same mission. My plan was to get a laptop with a broken/dead LCD, and get one of the LCD TV/PC Monitor displays to mount on the wall. The laptopVGA output can drive the monitor, and it can run stand-alone as a TV.
