Alternatives in Action is committed to building opportunities for youth with leadership potential to take charge of their life and make positive changes in their communities. We serve 1000 youth intensively each year through community school initiatives in four distinct school communities, operating a public charter high school and operating a preschool that serves as a learning lab for youth. Our staff, youth, and family population are diverse and committed to quality work and community-building. This position is located at our McClymonds High School site in West Oakland.
We are seeking a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professional to work part-time coordinating two after-school project groups. These groups will engage young people in global engineering and manufacturing through innovative hands-on projects that take science concepts from the classroom and turn them into real-world project-based learning experiences for our students. The ideal candidate would: ● Be a committed youth worker who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves in a non-traditional setting and facilitate real-world skill building ● Be a motivated and responsible leader who is dedicated to upholding a strong school culture ● Have an ability to work with urban youth and collaborate with other adult allies within a social justice framework ● Have a background or experience in manufacturing, engineering and/or mechanics ● Have an interest and background in design competitions such as the Makers Faire or Robotics
