Greetings!

I've purchased the Make Ultimate Microcontroller pack as shown here:
http://makeprojects.com/Wiki/msump

If you scroll down a bit, your see the included LCD display described as:
LCD alphanumeric display screen, 16x2 (1)—Has 2 lines of 16 characters, in blue pixels over a yellow-green LED backlight, and measures 80mmX36mmX15.8mm.

For the life of me I can't get the backlight to work. I've hooked up pin 15 to 5V+ and pin 16 to ground, no dice.

Can someone tell me how to get the backlight on this display working? THANKS!

Hi. Some LCDs that are similar to the one you have are built using the same basic components. Options are included that add functionality such as a backlight or another pcb that allows the LCD to be used with serial communication.

I checked out my LCD which looks very much like yours except mine was with the StampWorks kit from Parallax. The LCD in the StampWorks kit does not have a backlight. If yours has a backlight, it should be able to be activated by applying +5 Vdc (or 3.3 Vdc) to pin 15 and GND to pin 16.

Here is a link to a similar LCD with the spec sheets:

Check page 5, item 5 for a block diagram. If the backlight does not work then chances are your LCD does not have a backlight.

Check with Make to find out for sure if your LCD does not have a backlight.

Thanks, blues. Make specs claim the LCD has backlight as per the link in original post, but apparently the LCD actually included in the kit does not.
