Makers and Making: Rovera 4WD kit

Can anyone help with troubleshooting? I have the 4wd Rovera kit, and I'm trying to get it to follow a line. I used 3/4" electrical tape for the line as suggested in the book, on a long piece of white butcher paper. The bot tries a few small corrections, but it generally just takes off in a straight line. The sensors are wired correctly as far as I can tell (I even went so far as to re-solder the perf board). The IR emitters are emitting (I used a cheap digital camera to look for the infrared).

I have 2 observations- first, my 360 degree numbers from the rotation calibration exercise are about 4 times what the standard ones in the code are, and my drift differential is 10%. Running the calibrate rotation was a little weird. It seems like the left hand motors are significantly stronger than the right - the bot turns farther to the right than it does to the left when the same power is applied in the opposite polarity.
When I first wired the bot, the right hand motors were wired backwards, but once I fixed that, it would roll straight and rotate.

any ideas?
Now I just need to get it to follow a line so I can move onto obstacle avoidance....
